Walker’s touch

Dear Aelise,

Have you ever heard of the song ‘Walker’s Touch’? It is very inspiring, although very long, but it is perfect for long marches. I remember when I was in my brigade we used to sing this song as we were travelling between our posts. It is has a cheerful five beat repetition that can be continued endlessly. The best part is that new lines can be fitted in as you march.

The Walker’s Touch upon us,

Heft away our packs,

On-ward we go,

put another foot,

off to see the maid,

away from this old grouch…

I whistle the tune as I walk down the roads leading to my next destination. It will be some time yet, judging from the fields that lie along the road as far as I can see.
